The timehonored secrets of physical preparation and recovery for Ancient Greek athletes are now the source of a treatment, lasting 50 or 80 minutes, that creates a profound sense of well-being.
Designed to be both preventive and curative, massages like these
had not been given before in Europe. In Sparta, these pioneering
treatments followed a specific protocol:
· An initial massage on dry skin
· Application of powder or sand to the skin
· Use of an aromatic oil
· Use of a scraper (strigil) to remove the powder-oil mixture
· A body massage using warm plant-based oils, mixed with decoctions of aromatic herbs and flowers, chosen for their specific properties.
Various pressure points and rubbing techniques were used to treat injuries and relieve the muscles. After these massage treatments, athletes were ready to fight or to take part in competitions to prove their impressive strength, the forerunners of the Olympic Games.
